Course Description: This course provides an in-depth study of the Old Testament Prophets and Wisdom Books, exploring their historical context, theological themes, and enduring relevance for spiritual growth and diaconal ministry. The first half of the course will focus on the historical and writing prophets, examining their messages of covenant fidelity, social justice, and messianic hope. The second half will delve into the Wisdom Books, highlighting their insights into the human condition, the pursuit of meaning, and their foundational role for New Testament revelation and Catholic liturgy. Special attention will be given to how these texts inform Catholic social teaching and equip future deacons for effective pastoral care.

Specific Learning Outcomes for Prophets Class: By the end of this course, students will:

  • Explain the major themes found in the Hebrew prophets.
  • Recognize the content of the biblical books of the writing prophets.
  • Recognize the prophetic responses to historical events in Ancient Israel.
  • Recognize that the roots of Catholic social teaching are in the Hebrew prophets, who announced God’s special love for the poor and called God’s people to a covenant of love and justice. This commitment arises from our experiences of Christ in the Eucharist.

Specific Learning Outcomes for the Wisdom Literature Class: By the end of this course, students will:

  • Identify which Old Testament books comprise the Wisdom books (Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs, Wisdom, and Sirach)
  • Recognize how the Wisdom books lay the groundwork for New Testament revelation, with references to wisdom in the context of the incarnate Word and the Holy Spirit
  • Recognize that the Church's liturgy draws upon Wisdom literature, including that found within sacred music and the Liturgy of the Hours, indicating its significance for Catholic worship and spirituality
  • Recognize that the Wisdom books enable a more profound comprehension of the human condition and equips the clergy to be more compassionate and effective in pastoral care.
